Founded in May of 1930, the nation of the Outer Banks joined Dixie less than a year later amidst rising tensions with Kentucky and Tennessee. After becoming wealthier from Atlantic trade, and watching the semi-successful secession of French Louisiana, the Outer Banks began to agitate for independence again. Lacking the military to repel the Empire State or ISA, a compromise of sorts was struck, and the Outer Banks formed a protectorate under the Confederation. While leaving the CAF responsible for defending the Outer Banks, tensions between Appalachia, Dixie, and its new protectorate continue to rise.
Foreign Relations[]
Like Dixie as a whole, the Outer Banks have strong ties across the pond to Britain. The Empire State and ISA are, at least for now, more occupied with other concerns, though this may change if a formal split with the Confederation occurs. Relations with the Confederation as a whole remain strained, with Georgia particularly worried about what the future may hold. Appalachia is the largest foe of the Outer Banks, both formally and informally via pirates and bootleggers.
Magic and Demographics[]
The Outer Banks, and Virginia in particular, seems to be the only part of the former United States interested in actively emulating the elitist and cloistered nature of "Old World" magic. Sure, the various traditions are present in other regions, but there they are tolerated or bargained with for economic or military reasons - only the Outer Banks actively courts the Collegium looking to emulate its culture. While thus far such attempts have been unsuccessful, if the protectorate manages to lure some trade away from its northern neighbors and become a country in its own right, that situation may change.
Demographically the Outer Banks reflect the American South as a whole, being overwhemingly human and epesi with a distantly trailing minority of gnomes.
